What is THE BOX?

Picture
THE BOX is a place to dispose of unused or expired medications quickly, safely, and responsibly.

Why do we need it?

Picture
Next to marijuana, the most common drugs teens use to get high are prescription medications.

Home medicine cabinets are the number one point of access for youth to get prescription medications.
  • 1 in 4 teens say they have misused prescription drugs
  • 1 in 10 teens say they have used cough syrup to get high

The BOX prevents medication from being disposed of in our landfills and water supply. It is not safe for the environment to throw away or flush medications.

Safe Rx Use

  • Pharmacists and doctors can answer the questions you have about your prescription.
  • Do not take someone else's prescription medications.
  • Do not share your prescription medications with another person.

Safe Rx Storage

  • Store medication in a safe place away, away from  youth and guests; lock up medicines if necessary.
  • Track the amount in each container, especially opioids  and other mood altering medicines.
  • Keep medicines in their original bottle or package.

Safe Rx Disposal

  • Medications should not be flushed down the toilet.
  • Medications should not be thrown away.
  • For questions on safe disposal, please call IMPACT Communities, a program of DPR, at 972-518-1821.
